Officers behind foiled coup knew consequences of their action – Defense Minister

Defense Minister Breaks Silence on Foiled Coup Attempt

The Nigerian government has officially moved from denial to decisive action regarding the attempted putsch that shook Abuja in late 2025. In a recent high-profile interview with TRT World, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, made it clear that the military officers currently in custody were under no illusions about the gravity of their actions.

”They must have made up their minds when they decided to do this,” Musa stated, referring to the group of approximately 16 to 40 suspects—including high-ranking officers and civilians—who were allegedly part of a plot to violently overthrow the government and assassinate top political leaders.

The Journey from Denial to Confirmation

For months, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) maintained that the arrests made in October 2025 were purely disciplinary, citing “acts of indiscipline and service breaches.” However, on January 26, 2026, the narrative shifted. The military high command officially admitted that the investigation had uncovered a genuine plot to topple the democratically elected government.

This admission confirms long-standing media reports that linked the cancellation of the 2025 Independence Day parade to security threats. The investigation, now concluded, identifies a network of conspirators who reportedly purchased vehicles and coordinated reconnaissance to strike the heart of the Nigerian state.

Compassion Amidst Justice: The Fate of Families

One of the most striking aspects of Minister Musa’s February 1st reflection was the government’s stance on the families of the accused. While the Minister promised that the perpetrators would “face the wrath” of the law, he also emphasized a humanitarian approach toward their innocent relatives.

  • Fair Trial Guaranteed: The accused will be arraigned before a military judicial panel and allowed legal counsel of their choice.
  • Family Support: In a rare gesture of state maturity, the Minister assured that the wives and children of the suspects would not be abandoned or victimized for the sins of their patriarchs. “The government is making sure their families are treated fairly,” Musa added.

Why This Matters for Nigeria’s Democracy

Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule in 1999 marked the beginning of its longest democratic stretch. The “coup contagion” seen in other West African nations has put the region on edge, making the foiling of this plot a critical win for constitutional order.

The Defense Minister’s message is a clear signal to the Armed Forces: The era of unconstitutional changes of power is over. By highlighting that “Honest Service Never Loses,” the administration is contrasting the dishonorable path of the plotters with the integrity required of a modern soldier.

Legislative and Military Reshuffle

Following the uncovering of the plot, President Tinubu has already taken steps to “fortify” the administration. This includes the reshuffling of top military brass and the strategic appointment of General Musa (formerly Chief of Defence Staff) to the Ministry of Defence. This move is seen as a way to bring battle-tested experience into the cabinet to oversee the upcoming court-martials and ensure military loyalty.
